Duluth Pack Anyone?

I suppose if this duluth pack has endured the canoe trails since the 1800s, we made a great choice in trip packs. Of course, if we could sell all of ours for $46,000 a piece (see ebay listing), I might be tempted to let them go.

A Spectacular 75th Celebration

Over the Labor Day weekend, almost 130 alumni, current families and friends of Chippewa descended on Cass Lake to celebrate our landmark summer...and what a celebration it was. Among the many highlights were the Chippewa Alumni Sailing regatta with all twelve boats underway, the riflery tournament won by alumnus Tony Hirsch, a ceremonial opening of the Alumni Cabin, the Chippewa Yacht Club reception at Sanders Sail Shanty, a banquet honoring JP and much, much more.

Thanks to everyone who attended. It was truly a remarkable and memorable event. Photos will be posted here on the blog and in CHIPS, so check back next week. Now it's off to summer 76!

Summer 75 - A Fond Farewell

Camp is eerily quiet for what should be a busy 1st period. Summer 75 has come to an end. Congratulations, Camp Chippewa, for 75 remarkable summers. And to the campers and staff from our landmark year, we bid you 'farewell'....and see you next year!

Chippewa Takes First Place!

CJ and Terri’s Chippewa Honey was honored at the Beltrami County Fair, winning the Blue Ribbon for first place and the Purple Ribbon for grand champion. Furthermore, the honey was judged to be so good that it was placed in the “Court of Honor”. The judge said it is the first time that honey was ever awarded the Court of Honor and was very impressed with the quality. Needless to say, we were pretty proud of our bees, and at this moment they are back to work preparing for next year’s fair. The abundance of basswood trees provides a good supply of fragrant, nectar producing flowers and a honey which is light in color, delicate and mild, with warm herbal notes and a clean finish.

2nd Session Update

It's a first for second session...a dripping wet morning to water the trees around camp. The weather this summer (for both sessions) has been outstanding, helping to create the perfect backdrop for a enthusiastic start to second session. We're nine days into the second session and all too soon, our two-week Badger campers will be headed home. But not without some real highlights.

Fishing trips around camp have produced literal boat-loads of walleye, crappie and northern pike, with a subsequent fish fry. Sam Devine has been busy taking boys to nearby Little Bass Lake, a fisherman's heaven. Meanwhile the in-camp program is running on all cylinders, evidenced by the success that our Chippewa campers enjoyed at the regatta with nearby Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert. In archery, riflery and sailing our campers competed and found the marks while representing Chippewa with class. It was a fun day for the 22 campers from all ages of camp. Cody O. and Trevor G. were standouts in archery, while Spencer D. and crew fared very well in the sail races.

Sunday's Billy Bonka Day (Willy Wonka's candy-making cousin) will certainly be a highlight for years to come. Throughout the day, teams toured his "factory" and helped create new candies and confections. In the evening, the teams solved a series of puzzles, leading them to an 'explosive' ending....Mentos dropped into bottles of Fizzy Lifting Drink. If you haven't tried it yourself, give it a shot and stand back!

The canoe trips begin to head out in earnest this week. Our first Hook Island trip left camp this morning with a bunch of excited fishermen from Olson cabin, as did our special 75th Anniversary Sail Trip on Lake Superior. Patrick H., Calvin W., Jesse O., Sing Lok W., and Byron A. will be crossing Lake Superior from the Apostle Islands to Isle Royale aboard the 38-foot catamaran called "Chat- Eau". It's a remarkable 8-day adventure!

Stay tuned for more photos as second session unfolds.
